Abstract: This essay examines how Schleiermacher, Barth, and Newman met the challenge of critical scholarship. For each theologian there is a description of their own approach to the theoretical interpretation of Scripture and then an analysis of how that approach took practical form in the course of their sermons. Despite the fact that all three theologians would appear to have very little in common they share a good deal of common ground. First, all three take the Bible seriously. Second, for each there is a clear connection between Scripture and doctrine. Third, one has a sense that the three approaches combined might be stronger than any one on its own.
